In early 1990s Norway, the extreme metal band Mayhem formed the nucleus of an extremist Satanic subculture known as the 'Black Metal Inner Circle.' Following the gruesome 1991 suicide of vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin ('Dead'), guitarist Euronymous photographed the corpse and allegedly made necklaces from skull fragments. Between 1992 and 1993, circle members orchestrated the firebombing of over 50 historic wooden stave churches across Norway. The spiral of violence culminated in August 1993 when Burzum mastermind Varg Vikernes drove to Oslo and brutally stabbed Euronymous 23 times in his apartment stairwell, resulting in a 21-year prison sentence.
